Abstract

Coccinia grandis has been used in traditional medicine for treatment of several diseases. The objective of the present study is to investigate phytochemical constituents and pharmacological properties of Coccinia grandis fruit extracts. In vitro antioxidant and anti inflammatory activity of C. grandis fruit extract were performed. Phtyochemical evaluation revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, phytosterols, resins, tannins, flavonoids, proteins and diterpenes. The efficiency of antioxidant activity was found in the order methanol>ethanol>petroleum ether>chloroform>n-hexane. For anti inflammatory study, n-hexane and petroleum ether showed the highest inhibitory activity and least was observed in chloroform followed by ethanol and methanol extracts.
