The aim is to publish a lab manual in a comprehensive way, with an object to provide a standard lab manual for plant tissue culture for botany undergraduate and post graduate students, encompassing the various topics of plant tissue culture. The book lays balanced emphasis on different aspects of plant tissue culture.

The lab manual is in conformity with the latest CBCS syllabus of the UG and PG course, prescribed by University of Calcutta. We believe that the book should be of a slightly higher level. The topics are simple, lucid and interesting to make the book readable and enjoyable.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude and profound indebtedness to our teacher, Ph.D. supervisor Prof. Sandip Mukhopadhyay, Ex-Professor, Department of Botany, University of Calcutta, for his due supervision, concrete advice, guidance and encouragement throughout the tenure of our research work. His academic pursuit has always pushed us further to complete this work and he provided us with a platform which has turned our work into a much-enriched learning experience.

We would sincerely thank all of our teachers for giving necessary support, as and when required.

A very special thank and gratitude to Professor Siuli Sarkar, Principal, Lady Brabourne College and Dr. Kaustubh Lahiri, Principal, Dr. Kanailal Bhattacharyya College for encouragement.

We would like to specially thank all the teachers of Dept. of Botany, Lady Brabourne College, our laboratory attended for their cooperations and kind contributions in different capacities during the course of present work. Our acknowledgement would be incomplete without addressing them.

Plant tissue culture techniques have played a vital role in addressing many questions of basic and applied fields of plant science. Plant tissue culture is a collection of techniques used to maintain or grow plant cells, tissues or organs under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition. Plant tissue culture is widely used to produce clones of a plant in a method known as micropropagation. Different techniques in plant tissue culture may offer certain advantages over traditional method of propagation, including:

  • The production of exact copies of plants with desirable traits.
  • It is now also used for the functional characterization of genes, elucidation of underlying regulatory mechanisms by developing genetically modified (transgenic) plants. Due to their intensive use in various fields of applied plant science, plant tissue culture techniques have also revolutionized the agricultural sector in modern times.
  • It is used to produce mature plants within a short time.
  • The production of multiples of plants in the absence of seeds or necessary pollinators to produce seeds.
  • The regeneration of whole plants from plants cells that have been genetically modified.
  • The production of plants in sterile containers that allows them to be move to it greatly reduced chances of transmitting diseases, pests and pathogens.
  • The production of plants from seeds that otherwise have very low chances of germinating and growing.
