The basis of writing this book stems from my passion for developing reference material for managing disasters as the world moves further into technology, climate change, and human conflict there is a greater need to access technical approach to manage the disasters. Disasters cause havoc that leads to immense economic lose throughout the world. The author was motivated to write this book after experiencing a dam burst disaster at a remote area in Nakuru county of Kenya. The disasters recorded in this book occurred in various parts of the world. The suffering of internally displaced persons touches the hearts of many people. Whereas natural disasters can be viewed as inevitable, displacements of people because of human caused disasters cannot be forgiven regardless of the reason.

The book has been organized into chapters. A general approach of how disasters can be reduced if not prevented forms a core component. The approach is in a disaster continuum taking into consideration that something can be done to reduce or mitigate disaster at every phase of the cycle.

In truth, I could not achieved this without support of various groups of people. First of all my medical students at Egerton University Kenya, who did a wonderful term paper that contribute to writing this book. Second my relatives, nuclear family and the larger Njeru”s family. I can’t forget the academic staff in the department of community health at Egerton University for their enormous input.
