This book calls on the political leadership of Zambia, the country’s mental health research and service provision agencies, primary care medical systems, community-based organizations and other critical players in health sphere — to make prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders and the promotion of mental health of all people through investing in mental health infrastructure facilities a very high priority. By all realistic measures and without any scale of exaggeration, no such priority exists today. The book, therefore, urges action at the highest levels to ensure that public health decision makers and the public understand the nature and magnitude of infrastructure problem in the country; that research to prevent mental health related problems can’t be achieved without deliberate policy directives on infrastructure development; that these efforts must be carefully coordinated and well-funded; and that Zambia’s Ministry of Health and its allied institutions and communities must prioritize the responsibility to promote the implementation of prevention interventions that can address current and future shortfalls in the public response to the scourge of mental health issues in the country. Clusters of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders create high psychosocial and economic costs for the people who experience them, for their families and communities, and the country at large. This book echoes many voices to the Government of Zambia to invest in mental health infrastructure facilities that guarantee comprehensive care to all and limit the enormous social and economic damage that mental health disorders create to our beloved country.
