Carambola is a tropical fruit that is globally known and used by many across the archipelago of the world. The name of the fruit varies from one geographical location to another, but the common trait is that it is used freely in the culinary arts and for its medicinal properties unaware of the deadly threats due to certain chemicals in the fruit.
In my exploration of the fruit, Five-Finger as it is locally known in Guyana, South America, I discovered that the fruit poses serious threats to those with renal diseases. I found that certain chemical substances such as caramboxin and oxalic acid are present in the fruit and cause serious health challenges to individuals who are predisposed to renal diseases despite the many health benefits. The negative effects of the carambola or five-finger outlined in this book are supported by the evidence-based data in copious qualitative and other methods of research projects over time. Findings reveal that there are certain signs and symptoms of death for those who are predisposed after consuming the fruit.
