Abstract
The “evaluation” of the Quality of Universities occupies a central place in the political-educational agenda. However, although “statistics” related to the education and employment system abound, there are few “integrative” empirical investigations, with wide spatial and temporal coverage, that show the quantitative factors and qualitative dimensions that impact the careers of university students, in their levels of university and occupational achievement (objective and subjective) as well as in their personal, professional and even institutional identity. Since 1994, the author develops complementary studies in this line. Two investigations are presented here, one with graduates and the other one, with students who extend their studies. The objective is to describe and/or explain (quantitative level) and understand (qualitative level) the “reasons” or “psycho-social processes” underlying the “figures” of the educational system in its articulation with the productive system associated with quality. The adopted methodology, sui generis, includes three levels of analysis – macro-societal, institutional and individual micro in sustained interaction or feedback –, according to the author's theory. In both research a different methodology is use and different factors are analyzed. The used techniques are semi-structured survey, tests, interviews and lexicometric analysis. The results show which factors have the greatest impact on both samples in the level of university and work achievement, in their professional careers and in terms of identity. Likewise, convergences and divergences of problems may be seen in both groups. The study provides elements to decision makers to introduce changes with a view to continuous improvement.
