Comparison of Physical and Sexual Quality of Life before and After Hysterectomy and Its Effect on Demographic Factors

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the effect of hysterectomy on quality of life using validated questionnaires which includes physical, emotional as well as sexual aspects of life.
This was a prospective observational study in which all women undergoing elective hysterectomies in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi from October 2017 to September 2019. All data was recorded on EXCEL spread sheet and analysis done by SPSS-21.0 and Wilcoxon-test as appropriate.
All aspects of physical and sexual quality of life was found to have improved following hysterectomy. However, only emotional wellbeing worsened. No association of demographic factor on quality of life. In present study SQOL-F questionnaire was used to assess the sexual quality of life. The mean period of beginning of sexual activity was 3 months after surgery in majority of women. Out of which, 65.5% women started their sexual activity at 12 weeks after surgery, 24.5% women at 15 weeks after surgery and 10% of women at 10 weeks after surgery with a mean of 12.3 weeks It might be due to the fear of vault disruption during intercourse.
Hysterectomy improves both physical and sexual quality of life after surgery, but the abdominal route improves sexual quality of life more than the vaginal route.
