A Comparison of Manual and Instrumental Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices

Abstract

The primary goal of this chapter was to compare the two methods of intracaeserean insertion of postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device, manual vs. instrumental, as well as to investigate the effectiveness, safety, and continuation rate of intracaeserean Postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) as a contraceptive method. The study included 100 subjects who were undergoing Lower segment Cesarian section (LSCS). In Group-A (N=50) Cu-T 380A was inserted manually and in Group-B (N=50) it was inserted with PPIUCD forceps. All subjects were monitored for three months, either clinically or by phone. Both groups' complaints, side effects, complications, and findings were compared and analyzed. The retention rate after the follow-up period was 94% in Group A and 92% in Group B.  There was only one case, (2%) of expulsion in Group-B. 3 (6%) subjects in Group-A and 3(6%) of the subjects in Group-B got PPIUCD removed for various reasons. There were no infections, perforations, or contraceptive failures. Intracaeserean PPIUCD is an effective technique of postpartum contraception, and both methods (manual and instrumental) are equally effective with few side effects and complications, as well as high client acceptability.
