Prof. Lanzhuang Chen

He is currently workings as a professor in the Division of Biotechnology and Breeding, Faculty of Environmental and Horticultural Science (FEHS), and Graduate School of Horticulture and Food Science (GSHFS), Minami Kyushu University in Japan. He was Dean of FEHS and Dean of GSHFS from 2019-2020, and 2015-2017, respectively. He received a B. S. degree in Horticultural Science from Hebei Agricultural University in China in 1982, M. S. degree in Horticultural Science from Yamagata University, and Ph. D. degree in Plant Biotechnology from Kagoshima University in Japan in 1989 and 1991, respectively. Since 1992, he as a fellow of Agency of Science and Technology of Japan has started academic research in the field of plant apomixis. His specialization areas include traditional breeding, tissue culture and gene transformation in horticultural crops, and clarifying the apomixis reproductive mechanism with observations of DIC and TEM, cloning of apomixis specific genes (ASG), and functional analysis of ASG with gene transformation in crops and Arabidopsis, isolation and analysis of aposporous embryo sac initial cell (AIC) with live imaging method, and gene transformation into single AIC by micro-injection technique. He has received widespread recognition in plant breeding via the Award of Japanese Society for Breeding, and in ASG-1 gene cloning via the Culture Award of Miyazaki Prefecture, in the field of Science.
