Transition metal di chalcogenides posses various oxidation states and unique properties in respect to diverse applications. Being a 2D layered compound MoS2 emerges as an outstanding material in optoelectronic device fabrications. This book chapter reviews some important applications in this field and discusses the existence of different phases such as 1T, 2H and 3R in MoS2. The structural changes and layer stacking sequence differences in different phases are discussed. Several synthesis and exfoliation techniques experienced in MoS2 and its mechanisms are portrayed. This chapter intends to provide awareness on the basic building blocks and unit cell structure of various phases of MoS2. This work also provides an insight in to the facile exfoliation techniques and its features which can be adopted for layered transition metal chalcogenides.
