Abstract

Adult psychology involves looking at the issues, stages and various influences that children experience throughout their development into functioning adults whereas child psychology refers as the interchange between the conscious and subconscious component in a child. Psychologists have distinctive opportunities to contribute to the empirical basis of health care with the help of evidence – based medicine. Focusing on the psychological aspects where adult patients are concerned, many studies prove that these patients have a greater awareness and consciousness of their malocclusion, which may bring about very optimistic expectations about the final results of their treatment. In cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, similar terms have also been incorporated, by which "first wave" is considered the initial behavioral therapy; a "second wave", Albert Ellis's cognitive one; and a "third wave", with the acceptance and commitment therapy, which emphasizes one's pursuit of values, methods of self-awareness, acceptance and psychological flexibility, instead of challenging negative thought schemes. Orthodontist needs to be aware of the potential for dental materials and products to exacerbate asthma. These items include dentifrices, fissure sealants, tooth enamel dust (during interproximal slicing) and methyl methacrylate.
