Dose Reduction through Experience and Relationship in Operating Theatre

Abstract

The aim of this work is to describe the strategy and the results obtained within the Operating Block, over the course of 8 years The contemporary practice of radiation protection is based on application of the linear, no-threshold model to estimate long-term risks to human health from exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation.  It assumes a particularly significant element in specific settings like operating rooms, including not just the patients but also the operators, who are frequently young women. The experience that will be described begins in 2016 with the introduction of a new C arm characterized by considerable flexibility in dose modulation even during the course of surgery.

The technical-professional approach, which does not separate the relational from the technical aspects, has enabled researchers to consider the significant, if subtle, differences between the concepts of "diagnostic image" and "high definition image" and to come to a concrete conclusion regarding radioprotection for both patients and operators. The Radiographer working in the Operating Theatre is responsible for promoting and supporting the involvement and active participation of the complete operating team with her or his training and professionalism.
