The study was undertaken as a preliminary step towards the use of salivary glycoconjugates and ROS as reliable markers of chronic periodontitis. Glycoconjugates are biologically important molecules with diverse functions. They consist of oligosaccharides of varying size and complexity, attached to a non-sugar moiety as a lipid or a protein. Glycoconjugate structures are often very complex and have intricate biosynthetic pathways. Overproduction of Reactive oxygen species is thought to contribute in the severity of the disease. ROS are highly unstable, with a short half life and thus are difficult to detect. However during environment stress and disease conditions, ROS levels can increase dramatically thus causing significant damage to the cell structure.
