Abstract

The absence of mature erythroid precursors in another wise normocellular bone marrow is a clinical condition known as pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). PRCA is a rheumatoid arthritis extraarticular manifestation that is a relatively rare cause of anaemia in Rheumatoid Arthritis, with only a few cases recorded to date. PRCA may be classified into hereditary or acquired.

We discuss a case of a 52-year-old woman who presented to us with severe symptomatic anaemia and had long-term untreated seropositive arthritis. Her findings were consistent with pure red cell aplasia after a thorough work-up that included a bone marrow exam.
