This chapter highlights a brief overview on Peri-operative Pain Management and Chronic Pain Syndromes. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Peri-operative pain management is multi-disciplinary and multimodal in pharmacotherapy. Opiates are for severe pain. Opiate free anaesthesia (OFA) or sparing techniques promote Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). When pain is effectively controlled, morbidity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) improve, and is cost saving.. It has wide-ranging impact on the sufferer’s life affecting the following aspects of daily living: sleep, behaviour, mood as well as the ability to function fully to participate and enjoy work, family life and social activities. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches are used to treat both acute and chronic pain. Depending on the degree and scope of the pain, best practise recommendations advise employing a phased approach using a variety of solutions.
