Abstract

Background: The word proprioception is derived from latin word “proprius” means it is one’s own and “reception” means it receives. In Musculoskeletal rehabilitation, proprioception plays significant role in maintaining normal motor control. Although, having this importance, the widespread accepted definition is not available. The first definition of proprioception was published by Sherrington who stated that it is as “a deep field of receptors in which stimuli are traceable to actions of the organism”.

Methods: A search of the articles were conducted between the years of  2014 and  2022 with electronic data base: PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PEDroand Web of science. The keywords were included were knee joint proprioception, joint position, active, passive, weight bearing and non weight bearing.

Results: after screening multiple articles the techniques were classified on the basis of Active, Passive, Non weight bearing and Weight bearing. Out of these, the clinically significant and feasible method was concluded.

Conclusion: All the methods have their significance and relevance with the aim and outcome. However, non weight bearing position was considered the most effective and convenient method.
