Abstract

Diarrhea is a prevalent digestive issue that affects millions of people worldwide, with the potential to cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. This scientific review provides a comprehensive overview of the various causes, signs and symptoms, and types of diarrhea. The causes of diarrhea are diverse and can include bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, food intolerances, medication side effects, stress and anxiety, and underlying digestive disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. Dehydration is a serious complication of diarrhea, especially in young children and the elderly. Acute diarrhea typically lasts for a few days and is commonly caused by infections or food poisoning. Chronic diarrhea, on the other hand, persists for more than two weeks and is often a symptom of an underlying digestive disorder such as inflammatory bowel disease. Traveler's diarrhea is another type of diarrhea that affects people traveling to different countries, especially those with poor sanitation. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea is a common side effect of antibiotics, and osmotic diarrhea occurs when there is an imbalance of solutes in the intestines. In conclusion, understanding the various causes, signs and symptoms, and types of diarrhea is crucial in providing effective antidiarrheal treatment and preventing complications. It is essential to seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than a few days, if there is blood in the stool, or if dehydration is suspected. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most cases of diarrhea can be managed effectively, allowing individuals to resume their daily activities.
