4-chloro-2-(1-phenyl imino) propyl phenol, a novel Schiff base ligand, has been synthesized by condensing 5’-chloro-2’-hydroxy propiophenone with aniline. Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Zn (II) complexes of the synthesized ligand have been prepared in the alcoholic medium. The ligand and its complexes have been characterized by various physicochemical techniques which include magnetic moment determination, molar conductance method, UV-vis, infrared and thermogravimetric studies. Magnetic moment data and spectral studies explained the octahedral geometry of metal complexes, thermogravimetric analysis explained the thermal stability of the complexes, IR and TGA studies confirmed the presence of the coordinated water molecules in the metal complexes.
