Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a multifaceted disorder characterized by a cluster of interconnected conditions, including central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Together, these factors significantly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome has risen in recent decades, driven by lifestyle changes, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and genetic predisposition. Pathophysiologically, it involves a complex interplay of chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, and hormonal dysregulation. Early detection and management through lifestyle modifications—such as weight loss, improved dietary patterns, and increased physical activity—are critical in reducing its associated morbidity and mortality. Pharmacological interventions targeting individual components of the syndrome, including antihypertensives, lipid-lowering agents, and insulin sensitizers, also play a significant role. This review highlights the etiology, pathophysiology, and current therapeutic approaches for metabolic syndrome and their role in creating general awareness among the public.
