Abstract

Many people these days are at high risk of coronary heart diseases, and not a lot of medications out there are helping them reach target lipid levels. Niacin is one of the most promising drug for dyslipidemia and showed remarkable effects on lipid profiles. Nicotinic acid (Niacin) is the most effective pharmacotherapy for modifying lipid disorders like elevated non HDL cholesterol, elevated lipoproteins, elevated triglycerides, elevated triglycerides and reducing HDL cholesterol, and so it is useful to offset residual cardiovascular risk and dyslipidemia. In this book we will discuss about extended release dosage forms, factors causing Dyslipidemia, and its symptoms, mechanism of nicotinic acid, applications and how it helps to treat dyslipidemia, proanthocyanidin polymer, and development of nicotinic acid controlled release tablet with proanthocyanidin polymer using encapsulation technique. This approach of developing nicotinic acid tablets is to achieve stable drug level in plasma with reduced fluctuations via slow drug release over an extended period of time. The encapsulation efficiency achieved was 99.73% and 99.52% of drug content. The drug release was 97.2% and release was extended up to 12 hours, 97.74% for 11 hours. The drug release followed zero order release. The results suggested that the formulated controlled-release tablets of NA through encapsulation can be effective than the conventional dosage forms and also better patient compliance. The efficiency of nicotinic acid in lowering cholesterol levels and treating dyslipidemia and the efficiency of nicotinic acid as a controlled release is experimented and studied in this book.
