A Brief Overview on Complex Ventral Hernia

Abstract

This chapter highlights a brief overview on Complex Ventral Hernia. Complex abdominal wall defects represent one of the more challenging dilemmas faced by general surgeons. Certain hernia characteristics, such as loss of domain, previously placed mesh, and extensive abdominal surgical history may preclude the use of laparoscopy. The key to success is an accurate preoperative assessment of big ventral hernia. It enables the recognition of operative interventions and encourages presurgical measures to improve a patient's condition prior to undertaking such a surgery. Preoperative CT imaging can identify indications of occult inflammation or infected fluid cavities that may change mesh utilisation and surgical approach, although not being beneficial in assessing the degree of intraabdominal adhesions. It is anticipated that surgeons will be able to considerably improve patient quality of life and repair success by adding improved recovery pathways into the therapy of complex abdominal wall anomalies.
