Thrombophlebitis is the inflammatory condition of the vein associated with one or more blood clots. If it remain untreated, it can results in severe complications which are fatal. The complications may include Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary embolism (PE). If a deep vein clot becomes dislodged, it can travel to vital organs and blocks blood vessels, the blockage of blood vessels reduces the blood flow which leads to a life threatening situation. The types of thrombophlebitis includes superficial, septic and migratory thrombophlebitis. Migratory and Septic thrombhleplebitis are the fatal kinds. They are very dangerous conditions because the immune system is over responsive. These conditions requires a immediate medical treatment and rapid diagnostic measures. The drugs available for the treatment of thrombophlebitis are very less and provides only the symptomatic relief. Recent studies have proven that low molecular weight heparins like Dalteparin is effective in the treatment of thrombophlebitis. The present topic is emphasized on the introduction, types, causes, diagnosis, screening models, non pharmacological and pharmacological treatment of thrombophlebitis.
