Abstract

Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) represent a spectrum of pathological conditions that pose significant challenges in clinical management. They range from simple situations like acute appendicitis to serious, perhaps fatal ailments like diffuse peritonitis. IAIs pose a significant clinical challenge, requiring prompt diagnosis and appropriate management to mitigate associated complications. This chapter provides an overview of current approaches to the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of IAIs. The diagnosis of IAIs involves a multifaceted approach, encompassing clinical evaluation, imaging studies, and laboratory investigations. Classification systems, such as the severity scores and anatomical classifications, aid in stratifying patients and guiding treatment decisions. Antibiotic therapy forms the cornerstone of management, tailored to the specific pathogen and adjusted based on culture results. Surgical intervention plays a pivotal role, especially in cases of peritonitis or complicated infections where source control is imperative. Minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy have gained prominence due to their lower morbidity and faster recovery. However, the choice of intervention depends on the patient's clinical condition and the extent of infection. Adherence to evidence-based guidelines is crucial for optimizing outcomes in IAIs. The integration of a multidisciplinary approach, including surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and critical care teams, is pivotal for successful management.
