Abstract

The objective of present article is to overview on integral role of few polysaccharides for pharmaceutical development of novel sustained and controlled released dosage forms bearing drug candidate(s). During the last few decades, it is evident for important role of polymers in major advancement of drug delivery technology in the field of biomedical, tissue engineering and pharmaceutical fields. It was due to those specific tuneable physicochemical properties of polymers that support for modified drug release patterns from conventional dosage forms and novel drug delivery systems. Those modified delivery systems were able to provide controlled and sustained releases of drug(s) into the vicinity of targeted area of interest for the reason of its specific pH responsiveness, biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-immunogenic, solubilisation and non toxic properties respectively. In this article, an effort was made to highlight few polymers for their physicochemical properties, molecular structures, and mechanisms of action for possible utilization in preparation and development of dosage forms for our pharmaceutical sectors.
