Index qualities help with fine-grained soil identification, categorization, and behavior assessment. The fine-grained soil's bearing capacity, swelling, compaction, shear strength, and shrinkage characteristics are all impacted by index properties.
This paper deals with the assessment of index properties of artificially prepared fine-grained soil mixtures (Kaolinite- Sand Mixtures and Bentonite-Sand Mixtures of varying proportions). The experimental data analysis of artificially prepared soils representing the natural fine-grained soils having extreme clay mineralogical composition is a value addition to the existing literature and is useful in predicting data for natural fine-grained soils having kaolinite and montmorillonite clay dominance.
An attempt to correlate the index properties with natural soil has been made in this study. The studies showed that Atterberg limits of the soil under study can be correlated (with respective clay size) linearly with a fair degree of accuracy. These correlations are helpful in predicting the index properties of soils.
