Abstract

The aim of this work was to conduct research on the key parts of the production chain of rheophilic fingerlings in the Mesorregio of Southeast Pará, in the Amazon area, raising their main productive, installation, and management properties. In the national fish culture, the strategic planning and management studies are incipient and restricted, mainly in the area of fish reproduction and management. Round species are considered to be more commercially produced in the Brazilian Amazon. Due to its high acceptability by the consumers, it has an interest aroused by fish farmers from different regions. Currently the State of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon, does not have a survey or data available on the sector, as well as information on the technical assistance provided to the producers, growing conditions, number, genetic characterization and origin of the reproducers about the main fish species produced in the state. Questionnaires were distributed to fish farmers based on the information gathered. Six fish farms have been detected in the region. The average duration (years) spent working in the production of fingerlings among the fish farmers interviewed is 10.8 years. Tambaqui, along with other round species, is the most abundant natural fish. The region has 239 ponds, with 44% used for rearing and 56% used for stocking of breeders (male and female). All producers polled monitor water quality, with dams providing the bulk (33%). In terms of sanitary concerns, 67% claim they have no difficulties with animal infections. The total number of fish in the reproductive population is 3,740 individuals. The study indicated that the fingerlings production units lack technical data, which is a critical aspect for system transformation via management and planning, assuring sustainability for the expansion of aquaculture in the area.
