An Analysis of STEM Gender Stereotypes in Higher Education: Using the United Kingdom as an Example

Despite the fact that women gained the right to education over a hundred years ago, they still suffer from the negative effects of various gender stereotypes. This article aims to analyze the stereotypes encountered by female in higher education of STEM subjects. Firstly, it outlines the situation faced by women in STEM fields due to gender stereotypes and uses the United Kingdom as an example. Secondly, it introduces two kinds of mechanisms on how gender stereotypes work. Thirdly, it analyses other contributing factors that can be influenced by gender stereotypes. Finally, it gives a short conclusion about different gender STEM stereotypes and how they work.
